Metocean Data Assessment & Interpretation for Site Selection
This program is designed to build consultant-level capability in understanding, analyzing, and applying metocean data for LNG terminal site selection and design input. Participants will learn to interpret environmental parameters—wind, waves, currents, tides, and extreme events—and translate these datasets into engineering, operational, and risk-based decisions that directly affect terminal feasibility, uptime, and safety.

Objective
This program is designed to build consultant-level capability in understanding, analyzing, and applying metocean data for LNG terminal site selection and design input. Participants will learn how to interpret environmental parameters — such as wind, waves, currents, tides, and extreme events — and translate these datasets into engineering, operational, and risk-based decisions that directly affect terminal feasibility, uptime, and safety.
The course bridges the gap between raw data and decision-making, empowering professionals to review, validate, and justify site suitability using real-world datasets and case studies.
Curriculum Overview
- Introduction to Metocean and Its Role in LNG Projects — why site selection depends on accurate environmental understanding.
- Metocean Parameters — wind, wave, current, tide, and water-level fundamentals.
- Data Acquisition & Sources — ERA5, Copernicus, hindcast, satellite, and in-situ measurements.
- Data Processing & Validation — techniques to clean, correlate, and validate raw datasets.
- Statistical Analysis — frequency analysis, extreme value estimation, and return period evaluation.
- Cyclone and Storm Assessment — regional event analysis and impact mapping.
- Application to Engineering Design — deriving design and operational conditions (Hs, WS, current, surge).
- Case Study — metocean interpretation and decision-making examples for LNG terminal projects.
This is a decision-oriented consulting course, not just a data analysis class. Participants learn to interpret metocean results to support engineering, safety, and project selection decisions.
Program Delivery & Engagement
Delivered over 5 learning days (spread across 2–3 weeks) to balance conceptual understanding with applied exercises. Weekend live sessions with case-based learning and practical discussions led by practitioners.
What You Will Learn
By the end of this program, you will be able to:
- Interpret and analyze metocean datasets from global and regional sources.
- Identify environmental thresholds critical to LNG terminal and jetty design.
- Evaluate multiple potential sites and prepare professional site-ranking summaries.
- Communicate metocean findings clearly in technical reports and client presentations.
